The old Balik Pulau Market
Thursday, 30 September 2010 22:47
LOCATED in the southwest on Penang Island, the old Balik Pulau Market dates all the way back to 1914. During its heyday, one's senses would be stimulated by a variety of sights and smells, from meats to fresh seafood to Balik Pulau's famous durians and laksa.

Today, the old market has been shuttered, and there is no sign of the usual hustle and bustle that was common in the last century. All stall owners have packed up and moved to a new complex (pictured right) on Jalan Tun Sardon, purported to be the largest such complex on the island, costing RM15.8mil. The modern facilities have received widespread praise, but did not come without its share of hiccups, such as blackouts.

Balik Pulau's continuing development can only be a good thing for the residents, and Penang as a whole. But as always, there is a price to pay, and the old market, in spite of its history, remains alone and forgotten, while the march of progress goes on without it.
