OPINION

Sharanjit Singh: What's your beef, Guan Eng? IT was supposed to be a joyous day to mark his first anniversary as Penang chief minister and also a chance for him to bask in the glory of having dethroned Gerakan from their crown jewel state. However, far from being in a celebratory mood, Lim Guan Eng -- who is also DAP secretary-general -- was enraged after reading an opinion piece in last week's New Sunday Times. (NST Online, 13.03.09)

Do we need the second Penang Bridge?: I commute to work daily, sometimes in a car, sometimes on a bus. Many times, I get caught in a traffic jam during office rush hours. When it rains, the traffic situation gets worse. Such is Penang’s traffic system. Too many vehicles clog the road. People who travel between the island and the mainland of Penang will either use the Penang Bridge or the ferry service. As the traffic flow increases, traffic congestion becomes a headache for motorists. The government has come up with a solution to this – a third link, i.e. the second Penang Bridge… but will this really be the solution? Do we really need the second Penang Bridge? (Reflections, 13.03.09)

Penang expand transport advisory group to 15 - who are they?: The transport working group set up between the State Government and the CEPAT had proven to be inadequate -- so the State Government has decided to expand the group to 15 members -- to include others, and to expand the concern to general transport issues. Since there are no further details than this report wonder if they have disabled/universal access reps in the expanded working group? (Penang Watch, 11.03.09)

This is for all the Penang CM & gang haters: Over these last few days, I have been silently lurking and reading some of the comments left by anonymouse and even remarks by Wong Chun Wai on his blog Someone griped that the Pakatan speakers on that night are knobheads and the ideas they churned out are dumb. I took these words from someone else’s blog comments. Well, whoever said that probably are knobbier heads than the speakers. On that night, I was sitting next to my son’s pediatrician. But at the same time, next to me are also some old ahpeks in singlets and big big shorts. So, you can see that the people came from all walks of life. I even overheard some ahpeks said, “Kim meh boh mik kia ciak eh” (tonight there is no free foods) Therefore, those speeches on that night are for the man on the street who are not logged into the latest news on online media nor read the newspapers. Why you can’t always believe the political-corporate spin: Exports of electrical and electronic products fell 35 per cent in Jan 2009. So Intel has started laying off workers in Kulim, according to The Edge. No choice, no VSS…This is why you can’t always believe all the ’spin’ you read. Recall what Guan Eng had said in this Bernama report on 22 January on the Intel plant closures. (Anil Netto, 10.03.09)

A year after Pakatan rule in Penang: GEORGE TOWN (March 9, 2009) - A year into power, Penang’s Pakatan Rakyat (PR) administration has vouched to continue making the government’s machinery open and transparent while working to achieve significant savings for the state. Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng said as part of this, the state is looking at formalising procedures to have the personal assets of all state executive councilors declared. (theSun, 09.03.09)

A Year Has Gone By In Penang: PENANG, March 9 (Bernama) - To the visitors, Penang is always alluring although no sigficant changes have taken place one year after the state government was taken over by the DAP, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) and PAS coalition. After a year has gone by, the people of Penang look back at the pledges contained in the manifesto of the DAP-PKR-PAS coalition in the general election on March 8, last year. Although some people feel that one year is too short a time to gauge the state's development programmes, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng still took pride as he felt that his administration succeeded in attracting investments totalling RM10.2 billion in 2008, compared with RM4 billion in the previous year.

How much of approved FDI is actually coming?: If you consider that RM17.4 billion is for foreign investments in the electronics sector (think Penang and Selangor) and RM20.4 billion for foreign investments in basic metal products (think aluminium smelters in Sarawak), then you begin to wonder how many of these approved projects will actually materialise. The global electronics sector is in deep trouble; so the Penang government shouldn’t rely on these figures for comfort this year. The figures for Sarawak include the proposed aluminium smelter (notice the sharp jump from 2007), which is nowhere near to being implemented - though that would be a blessing given the environmental implications. I remember when... Kebun Nyior was where little rascals had fun: The local school boasted of P. Ramlee as an old boy. A. SHUKOR RAHMAN also remembers when Tuanku Bainum who was a resident and when the Tunku came a-visiting on football matters. It may be far from being fashionable, glamorous or well-known, but the leafy neighbourhood of Kebun Nyior, just 2km from the heart of George Town, has a lot of colour and history. Entertainer extraordinaire P. Ramlee, for instance, had his primary education at Francis Light School and older residents recalled he was among those who planted tapioca on the school field during the Japanese Occupation. An Irishman abroad: IT’S just a few more days until St Patrick’s Day is celebrated here in Malaysia, and the event promises to be a fun-filled ride from start to finish. Failure - The mother of success: Here’s a tale for wannabe artists that tells of creative blocks, struggling, and staying true to your artistic vision. Chan Kok Hooi spent two-and-a-half months at Beijing’s world-renowned Red Gate Gallery late last year. He was the sole recipient of the Galeri Petronas International Visual Arts Residency Award 2008, offered in a rare partnership with Red Gate. But listening to him talk recently, you’d never know what a signal honour the stint was: “Other, better artists were also shortlisted, but I was selected in the end because I had less residency experience than the rest,” says the 35-year-old humbly when we meet up for an interview in Kuala Lumpur. Tai Tong Restaurant, Lebuh Cintra, Penang: This corner pre-war shophouse is an institution in Penang. Tai Tong has been in operation for umpteenth years, I remember dining there as a kid. (Very Sedap, 12.03.09)

Exploring into the heart of Kuala Juru fishing village: Ever since my adventurous trip to Pulau Aman to discover the wonderful and tasty Mee Udang (Prawn Noodles), I have been yearning for the similar dish, if not the best, which would be much nearer to Penang island. Eventually after much searching around, I found a place right within mainland Penang - Kuala Juru, the river mouth of Juru.

Siong Ho Fish Head Noodles and Porridge: If you are thinking of having some fresh seafood noodles or porridge (especially during this humid and contagious flu and fever season), you can always head over to the newly open branch of Siong Ho Fish Head Bee Hoon (Sg. Tiram, next to Shell petrol kiosk Bayan Lepas) along Weld Quay, Georgetown, Penang. The owner, Mr. Teh (Ah Ho) had more than 20 years of experience in cooking up fresh seafood noodles and porridge just for you. If the ingredients were not fresh as it should, they will definitely not pass the regular QC check of the boss. (Criz Bon Appetite, 11.03.09)

Penang Hawker Food - Lorbak @ Kheng Pin: Another Penang food that most people enjoyed eating is the Penang Lorbak. It is an appetizer, a side dish of fried mixed stuff of fish fritters, fried beancurd, spring rolls, fried octopus, preserved century eggs and the lorbak roll. The lorbak roll itself consists of chunky bites of marinated five spiced pork wrapped with bean curd skin (fu-pei). All these are eaten with a dipping of chili sauce and thick starchy lor sauce with beaten egg swirls. (What2See, 09.03.09)

Maxim's Cakes, Jalan Burmah, Pulau Tikus, Penang: So after the detour to Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng, we walked a little distance and made yet another pit stop, this time for some dessert. This rather striking shop called Maxim's Cakes was where we ventured into. We weren't there for the cakes, however, we were there for the gelato. Maxim's serves one of the biggest selections of exotic alcoholic gelato in town. (Very SEDAP!!!, 05.03.09)

Dessert | Mat Toh Yau Dessert & Food’s Milky MTY
: It is as if a revisit towards the past as we walk back the memory lane for this place. Nearly a year ago, we published a review about this tong sui which happened to be one of our earliest postings then. Fast forward to the present time, we came back again to this leng lui tong sui stall to introduce their latest offering, dubbed “Milky MTY“, which MTY stands for Mat Toh Yau. Most of us who have patroned this stall will remember this place as leng looi tong sui even though the actual name of the stall is Mat Toh Yau. After all, it was the pretty sisters that used to operate the stall here at Jelutong and at Taman Free Schools (near Caunter Hall) then and the sight of beauties whipping up sweet delicacies seem to be perfect match, right? :) (Penang Tua Pui, 05.03.09)

Cecil Street Char Koay Teow: If you want to know the success story of a Char Koay Teow stall, you should check out the stall located at a corner shop lot named Kedai Makan Teong Ah along Lebuh Cecil (Cecil Street). I had to wake up real early this morning at 5.00am just to make an effort to visit the place and have a chat with the cook, Mr. Leow, who has started frying Char Koay Teow as early as 1967. For the past 40 years, Mr. Leow has been frying along the roadside of Magazine Road before he was forced to move out due to a road expansion project. Currently, he has shifted to this new premise for more than a year. (Criz Bon Appetite, 05.03.09)

Dim Sum Food Restaurant at Macalister Road Gets Thumbs Up!: As much as I love my dim sum, I do shudder at the thought of doing a post on dim sum eating places. Because it would mean lots and lots of photos of decadent delicate morsels of popping flavour! However, since I also lament on the lack of decent dim sum in Penang, I just knew I must do this post. Because… Dim Sum Food Restaurant definitely serves one of the better dim sums in town! My family and I like this place so much that we’ve been here almost 10 times since we discovered it early this year! (which also explains my expanding waistline…sigh…) (travelhappily, 04.03.09)

Hokkien Mee - Opposite Padang, Penang: There is no hokkien mee that sells faster than this one in Penang. Business starts at around 7:30-8am for this Hokkien Mee stall close to Padang Brown (Padang is the Malay word for ‘field’) and finishes rather early around 9:30am. So seriously, if you are after a bowl of this popular noodles, then you’d better be prepared to be there nice and early. To be precise, this Hokkien Mee stall is located in the Classic Coffee Shop over at the corner of Perak Road and Jalan Kebun Nyiur. (Harbx, 05.03.09)

Penang Food | Ong Cheng Huat Seafood: Most of the time, good food are typically located at the front of busy road or can be clearly visible from the main road. But sometimes, you need to manuever slightly further in before you can see the restaurant. The same goes to this seafood restaurant that we dined just last week. Although not that far into the kampung, you will still need to know where to look at the sign before making the right turn. Else you can simply miss it. (Penang Tua Pui, 03.03.09)

Penang Hawker Food | Homemade Ice Cream @ Kek Seng Coffee Shop: Homemade ice cream is something we can rarely get nowadays. This coffee shop is famous for its homemade ice cream topped on ice kacang. Kek Seng Coffee Shop is one of the hidden gems in Penang. My ice kacang topped with chocolate and sweet corn ice cream. There are also one piece of jelly on top of the ice kacang which I found that it’s pretty unique. It’s very refreshing to have a bowl of ice kacang in a hot sunny day. (alliefoodtalk, 03.03.09)

Coffee Tree: Everytime I drive along the Bagan Jermal road, I pass by this place called Coffee Tree and everytime I pass by there, I make a mental note to go check this place out someday but I never did. During lunch, one of my collegue mentioned that she has never tried Penang White Coffee and I suggested that we should one day drop by Coffee Tree to have a look. Somehow, all of us being coffee-addicts decided to take an extended lunch break and go there immediately. (Duckies Food Blog, 27.02.09)

Kek Seng Kopitiam - Still Cheap and Good!: The iconic Kek Seng kopitiam is definitely no stranger to local Penangites. Having been in business since the early 1900s, Kek Seng kopitiam has consistently served cheap and good food. It’s been years since I last visited Kek Seng. It used to be my grandfather’s favourite eating place. And I remember that I hated going there because it was really hot and packed! Little did I realize at that young age, that I was being brought to one of the best places to eat in Penang! (Lingzie’s Tummy Treats, 02.03.09) [related articles]

New Tasty Hokkien Mee at Huat Heng Cafe, Tg Bungah: All this while I have been searching up and down for great hokkien mee. There have been a few places but most of them are too commercialised, either you have to wait for very long or the owner of the stall is not serving you right. However, this is not the case for the one I am going to introduce, Huat Heng Cafe. The location of this cafe is a few shops away from Esso petrol station at hillside, Tanjong Bungah. This cafe is located at the same row of Jalan Sungai Kelian, you will see Baan Thai restaurant from the opposite side. (Steven Goh, 02.03.09)

Another “Gurney Drive” for Penang, The Deck and The Promenade: Penang is known for its Sea Side Recreation areas of Gurney Drive at Pulau Tikus and Esplanade at George Town. Last year IJM the builders of Penang Coastal Highway came out with The Deck and The Promenade, for the folks staying on the eastern side of the island at Jelutong. On one of my trips back to the Island, I drop by to see what the fuss. The best thing about this place is the view of the Penang Bridge. It was quite empty when I was here, could be due to the time, however I notice there is neither a food court nor any other facilities around here. (@snapshots, 02.03.09)
