The Pakatan Rakyat-dominated house is likely to approve a motion that calls on the federal government to bring back local government elections. However, for those who have waited patiently since March 2008 when the state government changed hands, the Penang assembly’s move would seem only due. Located along Kimberley Street, near the famous char koay teow and koay chap, we were taken aback with the exterior setting that it did not resemble any modern dining outlet in Penang. PMC To Introduce More Courses For Medical Students: PENANG, July 15 (Bernama) - The Penang Medical College (PMC) will introduce more courses next year to cater to the needs of students in various medical disciplines in Malaysia. "We are looking carefully at the needs in Malaysia and it is likely that the first new course offered will be the Diploma in Radiography and we hope to have the first intake next year," said its president, Brendan Lyons.

(theSun) Penang Asking For RM150 Million Allocation For Flood Mitigation: PENANG, July 13 (Bernama) - The Penang government is asking for a RM150 million allocation from the federal government to implement the second phase of the Sungai Pinang Flood Mitigation Programme. State Agriculture and Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Flood Mitigation Committee chairman Law Choo Kiang said the allocation for the implementation in the Tenth Malaysia Plan was much needed for the completion of the project, which had begun in 1998.  Penang mulls making Gurney Drive a no-smoking public area: GEORGE TOWN (July 14, 2009) - The state government is considering gazetting Gurney Drive as a no-smoking public area. Health, Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said the health department would be meeting with the business sector and obtain feedback from stakeholders on how the smoking ban can be implemented and which part of the state’s tourism spot should be designated as no-smoking zones. Unesco commends Penang for heritage integrity: GEORGE TOWN - Unesco has commended the Penang state government for maintaining the integrity of the George Town World Heritage Site during its recent session in Seville, Spain which decided on the fate of the joint listings of George Town and Melaka. Gurney Paragon stop-work order stays, says MPPP president: GEORGE TOWN (July 14, 2009) - Remedial works on the sunken driveway adjacent to the Hunza Properties Bhd's super condominium and commercial complex project, Gurney Paragon, will be fully completed in two days but the stop work order against the development project stays. Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) president Tan Cheng Chui said Hunza had already submuitted an appeal for the stop work order against its project to be lifted but "the MPPP will conduct checks on the remedial works before making any decision". Strong winds damage jetty: The Penang Government has initiated talks with the developer of the South Bay project in Batu Maung to preserve the fishermen’s colony there. “At the moment, the discussion is ongoing as to whether a permanent jetty can be built at the site to replace the 30-year-old wooden one,” state Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said when contacted after his visit to the jetty which was damaged by strong winds which hit the area early last week. State can set aside transfer of land title, says lawyer: GEORGE TOWN - The state government can invoke Section 320 of the National Land Code to set aside the transfer of land title from the state government to Koperasi Pegawai Kerajaan Pulau Pinang Bhd if there was fraud over the land transfer. Protests and vigils outside MACC offices: Protests and vigils have been held outside the Selangor and Penang offices of the MACC since the death of Teoh Beng Hock last night. Last night, some 200 people turned up outside the Selangor office of the MACC for a vigil. This morning, about a hundred demonstrators showed up. Spansion Penang to close plant at month-end: GEORGE TOWN - Spansion (Penang) Sdn Bhd which announced a voluntary separation scheme (VSS) for more than 700 of its 1,300 workers in February, will cease production by the end of this month. The workers are being let off in stages, and by the end of July, its test plant will be closed. The assembly plant ceased production at the end of last month. Sources told The Edge Financial Daily yesterday that while workers at the logistics unit would be the last to be dismissed on Sept 30, about 100 employees from the corporate services section would be retained. A calendar for Penang trade events: The Penang Government has launched the Penang Trade Events 2009 Calen-dar to promote the state as a regional and potential inter-national convention destination. State Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim said the calendar would allow convention participants and tourists to plan their schedules around the events as well as to encourage participation at major trade and business fairs in the state. Vandalism of assemblyman's centre: Case of mistaken identity?: GEORGE TOWN (July 13, 2009) - Penang’s DAP state executive councillor Phee Boon Poh's service centre in Sungai Puyu was again splashed with red paint in the pre-dawn hours. It was the second time the service centre has been vandalised as such by an anonymous party within a space of five days.
