| Demolition begins at Kg Buah Pala |

THE DEMOLITION process has finally begun in Kampung Buah Pala after a long drawn out battle over the land on which the village sits on. On Thursday (September 3, 2009) first four houses were demolished following anticipated resistance by the villagers (read here) and their supporters at the scene. The demolition also brought about some confusion over reports on whether the majority of the residents had actually accepted the offer by developer Nusmetro Ventures (P) Sdn Bhd. While it was widely reported that 22 families have agreed to the offer (read here and here), other reports highlighted that at least 13 families still were holding out for something more concrete in lines of terms and conditions defined in the offer and in compensation. Fearing the same fate of being demolished, residents of the 250-year old settlement in Tanjung Tokong are now appealing that the state government expedite the process of gazetting their land as a heritage zone in order to safeguard it.
