PENANG FOOD, still a major draw for tourists, is one of the biggest contributors to its economy. One of the revelations at the Penang Forum in early March is that it “contributes more to the local economy than the MNCs”. Read here. It is no wonder then that newspapers and blogs are chock-full of information on Penang street food on a recurring basis. Last week saw two writeups in The Star that showcased the best of Penang's beef noodles and nasi kandar.
“Enticing whiffs” by Helen Ong highlights the eateries that serve up the tastiest beef noodles in the island. “Probably the most well known is the one at the Lam Ah Coffee Shop at the junction of Chulia and Beach Streets, opposite the fire station, which Ah Theng has been running for the past 14 years. It was started by her ex-business partner’s father nigh on five decades ago”. Read here for other stalls that sell this kind of noodles. Another article, “The best in town”, written by Eddie Chua traces the finest of nasi kandar outlets back to Penang. “The delicious side dishes usually prepared using closely-guarded family recipes, is the secret behind the nasi kandar. In the more popular places, and especially those that are not opened all day, long queues are normal as customers wait to be served.” Read here for more on the nasi kandar trail.
