War Memorial

THE BRITISH erected a memorial at the Esplanade for those who died during World War I although, to Penang, the war was a too-distant phenomenon. There was one notable exception: A Russian ship Zemschug was sunk in 1914 by the German cruiser Emden in the Penang harbour. A buoy still marks the remains of the sunken ship.
