The Meng Eng Choo (or Ghee Hin Memorial Hall of Heroes) acted as a clan temple for the Ghee Hin Secret Society of the 19th century. They were mainly Teochew and Cantonese from China. When they were ousted from their original base in Lebuh Gereja by the Hai San, they set up shop in Rope Walk (Jalan Pintai Tali).
